The power of sport and friendship

The power of sport and friendship

Sport is such a great way for people to come together, form lasting friendships, and impact huge numbers of people.

I was so moved by the recent inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon which saw rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield stop short of the finish to carry his friend Rob Burrow over the line.

The event which was named after the former Leeds Rhino star Rob Burrow, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019, saw over 12,000 people take part, including Rob’s wife Lindsey.

Kevin said the marathon which was raising funds for The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Appeal and the Leeds Hospitals Charity, as well as a host of other causes, was a celebration of friendship. He has raised more than £8m for MND charities after several other ventures, including completing seven back-to-back ultra-marathons in November.

This was Leeds’ first marathon in 20 years and what an event it was.

Magical

As a personal trainer it gives me enormous satisfaction to help people get fit enough to take part in such events and experience the huge surge of emotions of being part of something so magical.

Running a marathon is no easy undertaking and you need to put the training and preparation in, but what a feeling when you complete one.

If you think you have a marathon in you and aspire to complete one, then my advice would be to go for it. You never know what you can achieve until you make a start.

Perhaps a marathon is not for you, but maybe you would still like to take part in a running event. There are so many events nowadays that you are sure to find one to suit you, from park runs to 10K runs, half marathons, marathons and ultra-events. There really is something for everyone.
