Time to take stock of life and exercise – and to be kind to yourself

Set realistic targets when it comes to exercise

The clocks have gone forward signalling the start of British Summertime 2021 and it’s only days until we can meet with more people as lockdown restrictions ease. Thoughts of summer and meeting friends may spur us into action re exercise, wanting to feel and look our best.

It’s been a long and challenging year for everyone and as we start to edge towards a return to some kind of normality, hopefully by June, it is important to be kind to yourself, and set realistic targets when it comes to exercise.

Many people have led more sedentary lives this year and no one has been seeing many people. People have felt isolated and fitness levels have, in many instances, dropped.

As life begins to speed up again, we all need to readjust and feeling as strong and healthy as possible will certainly help.
Of course, we all have our own relationship with exercise and it is crucial that it doesn’t become too overbearing and counter-productive.
Set yourself unrealistic exercise goals and you can quickly start to feel stressed and guilty, which can act against you both psychologically and physically, causing you to push yourself too hard and beat yourself up when you don’t fulfil your goals.

Why are you exercising?

Ask yourself why you are exercising; be truthful with yourself and really analyse the why.

Set realistic goals

There is absolutely no reason to set yourself unattainable exercise goals; you will just make yourself miserable and potentially cause yourself harm in the process. If you set yourself more attainable goals and then go beyond them, imagine how wonderful it will feel.

It is especially important to do this right now, when we are coming out of a period of prolonged lockdown where life has been very different for us all. Take the time to get your exercise routine right and you will enjoy it all the more.

Just because you are not doing conventional exercise doesn’t mean you are not exercising. Housework, gardening, playing with your children, painting the house, and many other things, count towards keeping active. So, if you miss a run or a gym class, but have been active around the home say, you shouldn’t beat yourself up about it.
